Heplful Connections For Becoming a Police Officer

As the saying goes, "It's not what you know; it's who you know" that ultimately gets people the jobs they are seeking. More often than not, this is the case, especially when you consider the fact that over 80% of jobs are acquired through networking. Obviously, the best people to know in any given company are the ones higher up on the "food-chain", such as the chief of police or one of the deputy chiefs. Regadless, knowing just about anyone will give you an edge over the competition, so be sure to ask friends and family members if they happen to know any police officers that they could introduce you to. The trick to this job-acquiring technique is the manner in which you go about doing it, along with a little bit of luck. If you already have a friend or relative on the police force, be sure to go on a ride along or tour of the department, especially since they could introduce you to other fellow officers, particularly the chief of police and members of the hiring board.

• Ask around (friends, co-workers, relatives) if they know any police officers to befriend and try to use them as a reference
• Tour the police department and become acquainted with some of the officers
• Volunteer to assist police officers (there are times when police officers need volunteers to roleplay)
• Go on multiple ride-alongs and give yourself a good name
• Ask local officers for tips on how to become a police officer - they can offer great advice!
